China is viewed as one of the world's emerging global powers and the China Forum, held at the University of Warwick in February, aimed to aid understanding between the east and west as well as highlighting issues relevant in China today.

On 26th February 2011,  a student-led forum ˇ§THE CHINA FORUMˇ¨ was held at the Warwick campus featuring various speakers including Ms Elsie Leung and Mr Martin Lee.

About the Speakers:

Mr. Martin Lee was the Chairman (1994 - 2002) of the Democratic Party, which is one of the largest and most popular political parties in Hong Kong. Since its incorporation in 1994, the Democratic Party has done well in every set of elections held in Hong Kong and has received wide public support. The European People's Party and European Democrats in the European Parliament named Mr. Lee the first non-European recipient of the Schuman Medal in January 2000.

Ms. Elsie Leung was the First Female Secretary for Justice in Hong Kong (1997-2005). Ms. Leung practiced law after qualifying as a solicitor in 1968. She was awarded a Doctor of Law, honoris causa, by the Chinese University of Political & Law, the Warwick University and the Shue Yan University in 2004, 2005 and 2010 respectively. On 1 July 1997, Ms. Leung was appointed the first Secretary for Justice of the HKSAR, becoming the first female Secretary for Justice in Hong Kong with responsibilities for the implementation of the legal aspects of ˇ§One country, two systemsˇ¨. Ms. Leung is now the Vice Director of the Hong Kong Basic Law Committee under the Standing Committee of the National Peopleˇ¦s Congress of the PRC.
