– Huang Yongyu at 80: An Art Exhibition (24 Dec 2004 – 28 Mar 2005)

Combining traditional methods with Western oil painting techniques to create a completely new effect, Huang Yongyu gained an international reputation as a pioneer in the reformation of Chinese painting. Although Huang once indicated that he likes to reflect on the past moments of his life, he has also stated that he has no interest in organizing retrospective exhibitions of his art. So this exhibition showcases Huang’s recent works: most of the approximately eighty works selected for the exhibition have been produced in the last few years, revealing that, even at the age of eighty, Huang is still actively exploring the world of artistic creation. |
In the afternoon of 12th March 2005, we organised an art appreciation tour to Huang Yongyu’s Exhibition at the Hong Kong Museum of Art. The rainy and cold weather could not dampen the enthusiasm of the thirty-three Warwick alumni and friends on the event. Macro Szeto, an acute artist and professional curator, guided us through Huang’s works with his profound knowledge in Chinese art and witty remarks.
Marco started by sharing with us the challenges the museum had to handle in the preparation and delivery of Huang’s oversize paintings. As we began to tour around the exhibition, Marco’s talk attracted many others who were in the exhibition hall. As we went, our group size was more than doubled. At one point, more than 80 people were following Marco amidst Huang’s breathtaking works! We would like to thank Marco for his time and effort. The event would not be so successful without him.
